Étienne Balibar (b. 1942), a student of Louis Althusser, became one of the most important Marxist theorists of our time. In Spinoza he discovered a thinking of transindividuality – individuals do not exist in isolation but constitute each other in relations – which became the key to his own political philosophy. His consistent critique of racism and of the restrictive immigration and asylum policies of European states is reflected in numerous political interventions, always closely tied to his philosophical analyses of equality, freedom and citizenship.
