Mario Vegetti

Mario Vegetti (1937–2018) was a theoretically minded Greek scholar and historian of philosophy specialising in antiquity. He received his doctorate from the University of Pavia in 1959 with a thesis on Thucydides, and taught at the same university as professor of the history of ancient philosophy from 1975 to 2005. His particular interest lay in the interplay of philosophical and scientific thought in antiquity, which he examined in Il coltello e lo stilo (1979). A recognised authority on Plato, he published a comprehensive seven-volume annotated edition of the Republic (1998–2007). Other important works include L'etica degli antichi (1989), Quindici lezioni su Platone (2003) and Chi comanda nella città (2017).
