Friedrich Schiller

Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805) grew up in Württemberg and was trained as a military doctor on the duke's orders. After the success of Die Räuber he fled Stuttgart in 1782. In 1789 he became professor of history in Jena, fell gravely ill and turned to philosophy, studying Kant for four years. From letters written in 1793 to his Danish patron, the Duke of Augustenburg, emerged the Aesthetic Education, published in 1795 in his journal Die Horen – the same year as »Über naive und sentimentalische Dichtung«. He then returned to drama and, in close friendship with Goethe, wrote Wallenstein, Maria Stuart and Wilhelm Tell. He died in Weimar at the age of forty-five.
